Alexios III usurped the imperial throne from his younger brother Isaac II in 1195. His reign was marked by foreign incursions on almost all borders, and he was eventually deposed by the members of the Fourth Crusade, who had been persuaded by Alexios's nephew, also called Alexios, to help retake Isaac's throne. Later on in 1211, Alexios tried to take the throne of the now Nicaean Empire, which belonged to his son-in-law Theodore I Laskaris, but Alexios was defeated and consigned to a monastery where he died later that year.
