Anna was born Giovanna, daughter of Count Amadeus V of Savoy. When she was married to the Emperor Andronikos III Palaiologos, she was baptised in the Orthodox Church as Anna, by which name she is better known. When Andronikos died in 1341, Anna assumed the regency for their son, John V Palaiologos, with Andronikos's nominee John Kantakouzenos as head of the government. Anna mistrusted John and declared him an enemy of the Empire, beginning a civil war with now John VI Kantakouzenos. During the course of the war, Anna pawned the Byzantine crown jewels to Venice to raise funds for her campaign. Nevertheless, Anna was unable to defeat John VI, and in 1347 an agreement was reached that John VI would rule as senior emperor to Anna's son, John V. Anna resided for the remainder of her life in Thessaloniki. |
