On head, in silver and silver gilt relief on enamel background, arms of the University of Birmingham; on back of head, in relief, 'The University of Birmingham / Founded in the Year of our Lord 1900'; engraved on back of shaft head: 'THIS MACE MADE IN BIRMINGHAM WAS GIVEN TO THE UNIVERSITY BY ALICE BEALE WIFE OF THE FIRST VICE-CHANCELLOR IN JUNE 1903' Hexagonal convex head; arms on front have border of enamelled trefoils set with a cabochon garnet; reverse has border of fleurs-de-lys and heraldic roses. Shaft has acanthus capital, with two loop handles, and at the back a table support set with a cabochon green chalcedony. Shaft-head with enamelled boss; main shaft, above knop, is hexagonal with spiral bands of silver and silver gilt, and 15 lozenges with relief ornament: bee (industry), sun (motive power), B (Birmingham), moon and stars (time), W (Warwickshire). Shaft below kno0p has fish-scale ornament, terminating in artichoke knop and steel tip. Designed by Phillip Webb; made under the supervision of R.
