Zabel was the daughter of the Cilician Armenian king Levon I, and named heir at the age of 2 or 3 on his death in 1219. At the mercy of various regents, she was forced to marry twice; first, Philip, prince of Antioch, who died imprisoned by his own nobles, and then Het'oum, son of the regent Gostandin. As the source of Het'oum's power as king, Zabel appears alongside Het'oum on his coins. There are no known coins of her alone, or of her and Philip. Though not a loving marrige in either case, Zabel did have at least seven children with Het'oum, including Het'oum's successor, Levon II. Zabel died before Het'oum in 1252. |
