This scene from the Life of the Virgin cycle shows the Virgin Mary ascending into heaven watched by her apostles. She is accompanied by Christ and God who place a crown on her head as the Queen of Heaven, with the Holy Spirit in the form of a Dove hovering above. The Italian engraver Marcantonio Raimondi closely copied this cycle of prints, including Dürer’s famous monogram, but when Dürer discovered the fraud he took legal action.
