A crouching woman contorts her body to gaze upon the viewer. Her limbs bristle and her back is scarred with a network of hatched lines. The loose material scrunched around her torso highlights her nakedness from the waist down and increases the sense of exposure and vulnerability. Schiele was a major figure in the avant-garde Austrian Expressionist movement. However, his highly erotic and visceral depictions of the nude were considered hugely offensive by the general public. In 1911 he was imprisoned for several weeks on charges of pornography and corruption.
