This jade bowl is carved in high relief with four scaly dragons pursuing flaming pearls amidst bands of cloud. In its interior is a long inscription which may be partly translated as follows: 'The large piece of jade was a tribute sent from Khotan [the centre of the Chinese jade industry].../The decoration is wonderful as the jade is lovely.../The design resembles the superb painting of Seng-yu.../Written by the Emperor Ch'ien Lung in the cyclical year Chia-wu (AD 1774)'. This is one of many known inscriptions by the Emperor Ch'ien Lung, who reigned between 1736 and 1795, on works of art in the Imperial Collections. |
