Fulani women, with their tattooed markings, elaborate hairstyles and ostentatious jewellery, are celebrated for their grace and beauty within Fulani society. Though the prevalence of Islam amongst Fulanis puts men at the head of the household, Fulani women enjoy a much greater degree of social freedom and are often active participants in the selection of their spouse. Women within this society take on the responsibility of all household activities, often including the possession of one particular special skill such as weaving.

Teacher, scientist and photographer Edward Harland Duckworth was recommended to the post of Inspector of Education in Nigeria in 1930 following the commendation of his teaching work in Cheltenham. During his time in Nigeria he taught science, developed teaching methods and was elected as editor of Nigeria Magazine, adding his own photographs to articles.
