BIRRC-H0009a.jpg

A carved wooden figure of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare is depicted standing with his left arm raised towards his head, standing next to a plinth. The figure has a square base, upon which 'DRAMA' is inscribed on one side in gold.

Notes:  This figure of William Shakespeare is part of a set of five wooden figures from the library of Mason Science College. Mason Science College was founded in 1875 by Sir Josiah Mason and was incorporated into the new University of Birmingham when it opened in 1900. Each figure within the set represents men from the fields of Drama, Architecture, Geology, Zoology and History. They are believed to have originally been used as bookends, possibly to demarcate the subject areas within the library. Photographs of the old Mason Science College Library show them mounted to the ends of bookcases.
