The permeameter is an instrument for determining the magnetic properties of ferromagnetic materials. The sample in the form of a bar 1 cm across is placed in the central coil and clamped into the iron yokes passing through the other coils. Magnetising fields are applied and the response observed with a ballistic galvanometer connected across the central coil.
