Attic black figured drinking cup (type C) of orange-red clay. Fineware. Black rim, handles, interior, base and foot. Central red field with black base line. On either side, two palmettes with running floral streamers leading to the centre of the scene. Side A shows a crouching figure (probably but not certainly female) facing R, holding a cornucopia in her right hand and an oval object, possibly a wreath, in her left. She offers these items to an ephebe, who moves off L but looks back R. A cloak is draped over is right arm, and he holds a spear in his left hand. Side B depicts a woman who moves L, looking R. She makes the anakalupsis gesture with her right hand at her shoulder. In her other hand she holds a ‘lollipop stick’ – a tree, or a mirror, perhaps. Moving away from her to the R is an ephebe, who looks back. His cloak and spear are as before. Both sides of the cup show typical scenes of parting, where the ephebe is offered the blessings of the house by his parents (A) before he goes to war. Side B suggests the separation of lovers. Complete and in good condition; minor chips to the interior; some flaking of paint on exterior.
