This figure of William Shakespeare is part of a set of five wooden figures from the library of Mason College. Mason College was founded in 1875 by Josiah Mason and was incorporated into the new University of Birmingham when it opened in 1900. Each figure within the set represents great men from the fields of Drama, Architecture, Geology, Zoology and History. They are believed to have originally been used as bookends, possibly to demarcate the subject areas within the library. Photographs of the old Mason College Library show them mounted to the ends of bookcases.
