BIRRC-X0694.jpg

Attic fineware black-figure lekythos of orange-buff clay. Black lip and handle, black on lower belly and foot. Two reserved panels run around the lekythos on the shoulder and belly. L-R on the shoulder: a man holding a spear, wearing a red-patterned chiton, a fillet in his hair, gesturing with his left hand; a naked youth looking backwards, holding a spear and gesturing with his left hand; a youth in chiton and cloak, holding a spear and moving left; a naked youth looking backwards, gesturing above his head with his left hand. Red paint detail to the hair and clothes of the figures. L-R on the belly: bearded man in cloak and chiton holding a spear; naked red-haired youth holding a spear, gesturing with left hand; bearded man with red hair seated on a frontal-facing horse with red mane and harness. Beneath the horse crouches a dog with a red neck. On the other side of the horse, a naked red-haired youth with a spear gestures with his left hand. He stands in a three-quarter back view. Beside him, another red-haired youth in red-patterned cloak and chiton, holding a spear in his right hand. There are two pale slip base-lines on the field, with the two rightmost men standing higher than the others. The field ends with a solid dark red line. Reminiscent of Exekias’ Dioskouri and the work of the Amasis Painter. Colour: fabric 5YR 5/8 (yellowish red), paint 10YR 2/1 (black)-glossy, 2.5YR 4/2 (weak red). Complete and in good condition. Minor chipping to the rim. Heavy encrustation to the base.
