Called 'gambari' or 'yar ciki' in Hausa, these garments were originally made for the pastoral Fulani and were worn also by some Hausa. It is a typical example of Hausa weaving across the Savannah belt of West Africa. It is composed of narrow-loom warp-striped strips (6 cm in width), which are woven from imported black and white cotton yarn. It has an embroidered collar with a 'dagi' (armorial bearing/digging rod) motif in white cotton. The flared skirt identifies this garment as a modern machine-embroidered version of the older 'binjima'. It was possibly loaned to the Danford Collection by P. Tunley.
