The Hon George William Lyttleton was born in 1817 and educated at Eton and Oxford. He succeeded his father as the 4th Baron Lyttleton in 1837. Committed to the cause of education, Lyttleton was elected Principal of Queen's College Birmingham in 1845 and was one of the founders of Saltley Training College, as well as its President for many years. Throughout his life he held positions on various school boards and commissions, including the position of Chief Commissioner for Endowed Schools. A lifelong sufferer from depression, Lyttleton committed suicide in 1876.
