Man sitting on a wooden chair with his arms in his lap resting on eachother. Wearing a light blue/grey suit with a light blue shirt and brown patterened tie. Sitting infront of windows with white frames and a peacock statue.

Roger Burman, CBE, DL, Hon. LLD, BSc (b. 1940), studied at Oundle and the University of Birmingham, and in 1961 entered the family firm, Burman & Sons, a long-standing manufacturer of machinery and in particular motorcycle gearboxes. He moved to the electronic instrument manufacturing company, Teledictor, in 1971, becoming its chairman in 1976. He was chairman of the National Exhibition Centre and the Symphony Hall from 1991-2014. Roger Burman was Pro-Chancellor 1994-2001, having also served as deputy Pro-Chancellor and deputy Treasurer. His father, Stephen Burman, was Pro-Chancellor in the 1950s and 1960s. The peacock in the background refers to Roger Burman’s keen ornithological interest.

Peter Edwards won First Prize in the BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery in 1994, and has since become one of Britain’s most inventive contemporary painters. His portraits of Sir Bobby Charlton and Seamus Heaney hang in the National Portrait Gallery. A selection of his works, Portraits of Poets, toured the UK, showing at the University of Birmingham in 2005. He lives in the West Midlands.

Notes:  Parts of the frame are slightly faded. There are also a few black marks on various parts of the frame.
