Description:  The emaciated and strained body of Jesus hangs on the cross whilst two mourners look on. In 1914 Corinth had welcomed the onset of war, hoping for a rebirth in German art, yet this scene reflects his subsequent despair at the social, political and economic chaos after 1918.
