Description: Together with Picasso and Braque, Léger was one of the major figures in the development of Cubism. This picture, however, dates from a later period, when his obsession with semi-abstract machinery was tempered by a representational interest in living things - in this case two pieces of fruit. The classical design shows much cunning in the manipulation of colour and space. Inscriptions / Translations: Signed and dated I.r.> 38/F. LEGER Signed and dated on the verso:Composition aux 2 fruits/38. F LEGER Notes: Exhibited: Musee Ingres, Monpellier, 23 June - 11 September 1977; 'Twenty-Five Years - Masterpieces of the Avantgarde', Annely Juda Fine Art/ Juda Rowan Gallery, London, 17 September - 20 December 1985 (no. 25) |
