Description:  The flourishing tradition of 18th-century Dutch landscape watercolours is little known in Britain. This fine woodland scene, which is comparable in many ways to the work of better known British artists of the date such as Paul Sandby, is one of a handful in public collections in this country. The work retains its original border. Barbiers came from a large family of artists. He was a painter, draughtsman and engraver, as well as a wallpaper manufacturer and a designer for the theatre.
