Description: Obverse: Laureate head of Tiberius. Reverse: Tiberius in a quadriga (chariot drawn by four horses, traditionally used for the triumphal processions of victorious generals) Tiberius succeeded Augustus as ruler of the Roman world in the year that this coin was struck. Tiberius was noted for his light touch as princeps and his orders to the Senate were few and vague. Suetonius says that he wished the Senate to carry on without his input. The titles on this coin show that Tiberius was already in a position of great power before the death of Augustus. Tribune Potestate gave Tiberius all the power of a Tribune of the Plebs. This meant that he could call an assembly of the people, sit in the Senate, veto any law, and that his person was sacred and inviolable. His powers were gradually increased by Augustus to facilitate a smooth transition from one ruler to the next.
Inscriptions / Translations: Obverse: TI•CAESAR•DIVI•AVG•F•AVGVSTVS• (Tiberius Caesar Son of the Divine Augustus, Augustus) Reverse: TR•POT•XVI•IMP•VII• ([in his] sixteenth Tribunician Power, Victorious General seven times)
