Description: In addition to his topographical views of Venice, Francesco Guardi also produced imaginary landscapes such as this coastal scene from the 1770s. Such drawings repeat the same range of motifs taken from the Venetian lagoon - boats, fishermen and coastal ruins - in numerous different variations. These pen and ink drawings with a simple wash of brown, were studio works which were made for collectors who appreciated their elegant economy. The drawing is in its original mount, decorated with a few fine lines and a signature indicating that it was kept in a portfolio rather than being framed for display. Inscriptions / Translations: Collector's marks of William Esdaile (lugt 2617) and J.P. Heseltine (lugt 1507).
