Description:  This well-balanced composition of an unidentified Italian landscape is one of many sketches from nature by Bartolommeo. It shows a fortified town surrounded by trees with the river valley stretching towards the foreground with no attention paid to the sky. Vigorous and dense hatching has been employed in his description of the hillside in contrast with the loose and curly contours of the foliage. This scene is enlivened by wanderers walking away from the spectator.
