Description: Obverse: Laureate head of Claudius. Reverse: Praetorian camp. Claudius was raised to the rank of Augustus after the murder of Caligula. He was found hiding behind a curtain by Praetorian Guardsmen who hailed him as Imperator then carried him to their camp located on the edge of Rome. This coin commemorates this event. Claudius uses the titulature that had by now become the standard on coins of the principate, a mixture of renowned family names (Caesar), honorifics (Augustus), religious titles (Pontifex Maximus, chief priest) and republican honours (Tribunicia Potestate).
Inscriptions / Translations: Obverse: TI•CLAVD•CAESAR•AVG•P•M•TR•P• (Tiberius Claudius Caesar Augustus Chief Priest [holder of] Tribunician Power) Reverse: IMPER•RECEPT (Received as Imperator, On praetorian camp)
