Description: The students living at University House kept this logbook of all air-raid activity which occurred between the above dates. On most nights, those on watch would make notes of any suspicious activity. As a response to growing fears about the threat of air invasion, the A.R.P. (Air Raid Precautions) was established in 1924. With the outbreak of War in 1939 special wardens were assigned to oversee the work of the A.R.P. in towns and cities. These wardens were responsible for the distribution of gas masks, the building and upkeep of both private and public air raid shelters and making sure that blackout regulations were adhered to. Other examples of Air Raid Precautions taken in and around Birmingham can be seen in the collections on the Digital Handsworth online gallery.
