Description: This commemorative key to University House was given to Mrs Alice Beale to mark her 80th birthday. Mrs Beale was the wife of Charles Gabriel Beale, the University's first Vice-Chancellor and Mayor of Birmingham, and the mother of Edmund Phipson Beale, the University's Pro-Chancellor during the Second World War. Mrs Beale was President and Chairman of the University House Committee from 1904, when it was established that there would be a permanent residence solely for the female students of the University of Birmingham. The building on Edgbaston Park Road, named University House, was completed in 1908 and still stands today. Portraits of each member of the Beale family are held in the Campus Collection of Decorative and Fine Art, including Mrs Beale's grandson, Charles, also a Vice-Chancellor of the University. Inscriptions / Translations: 'Mrs A. Beale, 10th July 1926 by the donors of the iron gates on to Edgbaston Park Road, given to commemorate Mrs. Beale's 80th Birthday'
