The Elveden hoard was found by two warreners who were digging for rabbits on 23rd March 1953. The hoard was contained in 'a Romano-British pot', which then had 'a piece of textile' over the mouth, with another, shallower vessel on top of that. The hoard consisted of 1,146 silver coins, 965 denarii and 181 antoniniani. The chronological span of the hoard runs from a denarius of Antoninus Pius in 152, to an antoninianus of Philip the Arab in 248. The emperor most represented in the hoard was Severus Alexander; the three Elveden Hoard coins held at the Barber are all of Severus Alexander.
