Smbat was a son of Levon II and brother of Het'oum II. He was left in charge of the kingdom of Cilicia by his brother, the king Het'oum II, while the latter went to Constantinople. Smbat used the opportunity to sieze the throne for himself with the aid of his brother, Gosdantin, but the latter later turned on Smbat and so Het'oum reassumed the throne. Smbat was imprisoned but not killed, the circumstances of his death are unknown.
