Alexios was the son of the Emperor Basil of Trebizond, exiled to Constantinople following his father's death, he took the throne of Trebizond from his uncle, Michael, in 1349. Taking the throne aged 11, he became the longest reigning emperor of Trebizond after 51 years on the throne.
