Allectus was the treasurer to the rebel Carausius, who set himself up as emperor in Britannia in opposition to Diocletian. When Carausius's troops were defeated by Constantius in Gaul, Allectus took the opportunity to assassinate Carausius and assume control himself. He too would be defeated and killed by Constantius's troops, however, in 296.
