Description: Magritte was one of the leading figures of the Surrealist movement, which he joined in 1925. This picture, also known as The taste of sorrow, is typical of his depiction of enigmatic subject matter in a style of disturbing visual clarity. The poetic image of tobacco plants, whose leaves transform themselves into birds, recurs constantly in the artist's works. On the reverse the painting is dated 1948, as is an almost identical replica in the Musée d'Art Moderne, Brussels. Inscriptions / Translations: Signed I.I.: Magritte Inscribed and dated on verso: "LA SAVEUR/ DES LARMES"/1948 Notes: Exhibited: 'The Vizion of Rene Magritte', The Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis, September to October 1965; Marlborough Gallery, London, 1973; 'René Magritte 1898-1967', Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels, 1998; 'René Magritte: The pleasure Principle', Tate Liverpool, 24 June - 16 October 2011; René Magritte: The pleasure Principle', Albertina, Vienna, 1 November - 28 February 2012 |
