Description: The subject of this portrait is traditionally said to be a female relative of an ironmonger (or a ferronnier) who was a mistress of Lodovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan. While the original is an oil painting, Ingres’s chosen media highlight the elegance of Leonardo’s style with its graceful use of shadow and line. Ingres’s own Paolo and Francesca (about 1814-20), strongly influenced by Renaissance art, can be seen in the Blue Gallery.
