Name: John of Gravina Brief biography: Count of Gravina from 1315, Prince of Achaia by right of his marriage in 1318 to Maud of Hainaut, whom he repudiated in 1321. He maintained himself in Achaia until driven out in 1331; he died in 1336. Son of King Charles II of Naples, John was made Count of Gravina in 1315 but in 1318 was married to Maud of Hainaut, Princess of Achaia. Her title was reassigned to him on their divorce in 1321, after which John remarried, but an expedition in 1325 only managed to recover part of Achaia. In 1331 he swapped title to Achaia for title to Albania with his nephew Robert of Taranto, and used the title of Duke of Durazzo until his death in 1336. |
