King of Jerusalem and Cyprus in succession to his short-lived brother, John I, Henry had the misfortune to see his kingdom of Jerusalem extinguished in 1291 by the Muslim conquest of Acre, although he claimed the title until his death and made one serious attempt at beginning a reconquest. In Cyprus he was much opposed and in 1306 replaced entirely by his brother Amalric, Henry being held captive by the Prince of Princes Oshin of Armenia. Oshin released Henry upon Amalric's murder in 1310, after which he returned to Cyprus to rule until his death in 1324. His marriage was childless and he was succeeded by his nephew Hugh IV. |
