John III became emperor of Nicaea following the death of his father-in-law Theodore I Laskaris in 1222. During his reign, Thessalonike was brought under Nicaea's control, and the Latin Empire based at Constantinople was weakened. He died in 1254 and was buried in the monastery of Sosandra. He is considered a saint in the Greek Orthodox Church.
