Anthony Bryer founded the Centre for Byzantine, Ottoman and Modern Greek Studies at the University of Birmingham in 1976 and its associated journal - the Journal of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies. He also began the Spring Symposium of Byzantine Studies and the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies. A friend of Philip Whitting since childhood, Bryer was instrumental in bringing Whitting's coin collection to the Barber Institute of Fine Arts. He also donated a number of coins and seals associated with Trebizond to the collection. |
