Basiliscus was the brother of Verina, wife of the Emperor Leo I. After Leo's death in 474, Basiliscus used the situation caused by his sister to take power from his sister's son-in-law, the Emperor Zeno. He raised his son Marcus to be co-emperor, but they were deposed by a returning Zeno in 476. Basiliscus sought sanctuary. He was promised by Zeno that he would not be executed, but was exiled and starved to death.
