Demetrios was a younger brother of John Komnenos Doukas who ruled Thessaloniki as despotes rather than basileus after his brother acknowledged John III Doukas Vatatzes of Nicaea as emperor. Semi-independent, Demetrios has his own coins struck, but in 1246 John III was invited to take direct control by other nobles under Demetrios. Demetrios was deposed and exiled in 1246. |
