The Scottish artist Quiller Orchardson married Ellen Moxon (about 1854-1917) in 1873. He painted a number of portraits of her as well as using her as a model for some of his well-known genre scenes from high society. This portrait was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1875, the same date as portraits of her mother and father. These family records remained with Lady Orchardson until her death.
