Green glazed steatite scarab with an open style carved back and chip carved legs. The base is carved with a kneeling figure of Heh clutching palm ribs, horizontal cartouche above inscribed with the throne name of Thutmose III, 'Menkheperre'. Longitudinal piercing. Notes: This scarab shows the 'Shesha' back style, as named by archaeologist Sir W.M.F. Petrie, that was almost solely used on Hyksos and Canaanite scarabs of the Second Intermediate Period (ca. 1650-1550 BCE). However, a solitary feature cannot be used to date a scarab as the cartouche on the base has the throne name of Thutmose III, Menkheperre, from the Eighteenth Dynasty (ca. 1550-1295 BCE). Some scarabs mix and match archaising features with more modern styles. |
