Son of John I of Avesnes, Count of Hainaut, Florent first ruled Zeeland for his father, and then served Charles II of Naples as Constable, but in 1289 was married to Isabella of Villehardouin in order that he might succeed Charles I of Anjou as prince there. He faced attempts at conquest from the Byzantine Empire and was defeated by them several times; he died besieging a castle they had taken in 1297. |
