Rousseau received an academic training, but began to paint landscapes directly from nature in the open air when he visited the mountains of the Auvergne in 1830. This scene has been identified as near Thiézac, Cantal. About 1846, the artist settled in the village of Barbizon near Fontainebleau, where he became a close friend of Millet and a leader of the Barbizon School of landscape painters.
