Gelon succeeded Hippocrates, whose cavalry commander he had been, as tyrant of Gela in Sicily in 491 BC, and then managed to secure appointment as tyrant of Syracuse in 485 BC. He increased the power of Syracuse considerably by warfare, and helped lead Sicilian resistance to invasion from Carthage in 480 BC. |
