Theophilos was Byzantine Emperor 829-842, having been co-emperor with his father, Michael II, since 821. Theophilos was the last of the iconoclast emperors, and the second emperor of the dynasty of Amorion. The coinage of Theophilos is much more voluminous than that of previous eras and presents a number of iconographic breaks. The gold and silver coinage of Constantinople from his 13-year reign come in five different types. One rare ceremonial issue shows Theophilos with his wife Theodora and daughters Thekla, Anna and Anastasia. Some gold and base metal coins also show Theophilos' first son, Constantine, after the latter's decease, alongside Theophilos' deceased father, Michael II. The base metal coins of Constantinople removed the functional marks introduced in 498 by Anastasius I, which by the early ninth century had become redundant; they were replaced by an inscription face. On his death in 842, Theophilos was succeeded by a regency council for his son, Michael III. The twelfth-century Byzantine satire, the Timarion, suggests that Theophilos enjoyed a posthumous reputation as a just ruler.
