Pupienus was Roman Emperor during the year 238 - the year of six emperors - alongside Balbinus. He had previously been a senator and was elected by the senate to replace the deceased Gordians I and II as the opponents to Maximinus Thrax. He and Balbinus ended up becoming rulers on behalf of Gordian III. After leading the campaign which saw the death of Maximinus and his son, Pupienus was eventually murdered by the praetorian guard. |
