John succeeded his father Andronikos III in 1341. Being a child he remained under the regency of his mother, Anna of Savoy. The regency was dogged by the civil war with John VI Kantakouzenos until 1347, when John VI was successful. John V was then married off to John VI's daughter, Helene Kantakouzene. His son, Andronikos IV, and grandson, John VII, briefly usurped the throne from John V in 1376-1379. When he died in 1391, he was succeeded by Manouel II. |
