Pescennius Niger was a clamant to the imperial throne in the aftermath of the successive assassinations of Commodus, Pertinax, and Didius Julianus, in opposition to Septimius Severus and Clodius Albinus, during the year known as 'the year of the five emperors'. Niger was defeated in battle by Septimius Severus, captured and executed. After his death, the city of Byzantium (modern Istanbul) remained loyal to Niger, and so Severus had the city destroyed. |
