Gordian rebelled against the emperor Maximinus Thrax, who had become emperor after the murder of Severus Alexander in 235. Gordian's rebellion had the support of the Roman senate. He committed suicide after the death of his son, Gordian II, in battle against Maximinus's partisans. |
