Romanos was a nobleman who was selected by Constantine VIII to succeed him. Romanos had been oikonomos at the Hagia Sophia and Eparch of the city of Constantinople. Constantine married Romanos to his middle-aged daughter, Zoe, to secure Romanos as a successor. As emperor Romanos placed the interests of the Church at the heart of his governance. Zoe is said to have been the cause of Romanos's death to further the interests of her lover, Michael IV. |
