|
Ulpia Severina was the wife of Aurelian. Officially raised to Augusta in 274 AD, a year before Aurelian's own death. Little is known about her life before marrying Aurelian - Ulpia could indicate her being from Dacia, as the nomen Ulpius was common due to the popularity of Trajan (Marcus Ulpius Traianus) in the province. She was also awarded the titles Pia (pious) and mater castrorum et senatus et patriae (mother of the army, the senate, and the people) - it seemed that these titles spoke to her genuine influence, as after the death of her husband, it seems Severina may have ruled in her own right. Sources speak of an interregnum between the death of Aurelian and the Senate choosing Tacitus as emperor. During this period, coins depicting Severenia continued to be minted, indicating that Severina was the only Augusta of the Empire that ruled in her own right until the Empress Eirene 797-802. |
