Quintillus was the brother of Claudius Gothicus, and succeeded his brother as Emperor for a short duration. Born in 210 AD, in Sirmium, Quintillus rose to prominence when his brother was made emperor. Upon his brother's death, his legions made Quintillus emperor, which was supported by the Senate - Quintillus was popular with the Senate, and was compared with other emperors that senatorial sources spoke well of, such as Galba and Pertinax. His rule did not last long, however. While he ruled long enough for coins to be minted in his image, Quintillus died somewhere between 17 days and 177 days into his rule - sources are unclear as to the timescale of Quintillus's accession, Aurelian's rebellion and Quintillus's death. The manner of his death is disputed; popularly, he commited suicide by slitting his own wrists in response to Aurelian's imminent victory. The Historia Augusta says he was killed by his soldiers for being a strict disciplinarian, however, and another says he died in battle. All agree, however, that he died at Aquileia.
